Tropical storm Hidaya weakens as it makes landfall in Tanzania
Tropical storm Hidaya has weakened after it made landfall on Mafia Island, Tanzania on Saturday, according to the latest update by weather authorities.
The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) said clouds associated with Hidaya spread over most of the southern part of the country, including Lindi, Mtwara, Coast regions and nearby areas, resulting in heavy rains in some areas.
As of 3 p.m. local time, Kilwa Masoko, in Lindi region, reported 200.8 millimeters of rainfall for the previous six hours, the TMA said in a statement.
Periods of strong winds exceeding 40 kilometers per hour were observed in Mtwara, Kilwa, Zanzibar, Tanga and Dar es Salaam at different times, the statement said.
It urged the public, especially those in at-risk areas, to take maximum precautions to minimize potential impacts.
