The trial of 17 Angolan activists accused of plotting a coup against Angola’s long-serving President Jose Eduardo dos Santos takes place today in the capital, Luanda, campaign group Human Rights Watch (HRW) says.

The 17 suspects, including popular musician Luaty Beirao, were arrested and detained between June 20 and June 24 in Luanda after attending a meeting to discuss the human rights situation in Angola.

Beirao, also known by the stage name Ikonoklasta, ended a five-week hunger strike last month to demand his release from prison amid growing concerns that his health was deteriorating.

The 17 were formally charged on 16 September with preparing a “rebellion and a coup attempt” against the long-serving leader.

Each charge carries a maximum penalty of up to three years in jail or a corresponding fine.
