U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has hailed the Sudanese transitional government as a “once in a generation opportunity” for the people of Sudan following years of Omar al-Bashir rule.

Pompeo made the remarks on Tuesday as he arrived in Khartoum for talks with the transitional government.

“Great to be in Khartoum for meetings with the civilian-led transitional government. The democratic transition underway is a once in a generation opportunity for the people of Sudan,” he said.

The U.S. Secretary of State added that he looked forward to strengthening ties between his country and Sudan.

Pompeo’s visit to Sudan was part of a regional tour coming on the back of a historic accord between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

Sudan has been under U.S. sanctions for years, as relations between the two countries deteriorated during al-Bashir’s administration.

Following his ouster in a popular uprising in April last year, a Sudanese court handed Bashir a two-year sentence in December on corruption charges. He also faces trials and investigations over the killing of protesters.
