A train driver was killed and over a 100 people injured after two trains collided in the capital city of South Africa according to SABC.
“On close inspection paramedics discovered that one of the drivers of the trains had sustained fatal injuries and showed no signs of life,” said Russel Meering, ER24 sppkesperson.
The injured were rushed to hospital after the collision happened near the Elandsfontein station on Thursday morning.
Metrorail has blamed cable theft for the collision.
“We suspect that it was due to cable theft but we have our technical team on the ground that is investigating and gathering information. From the information from the colleagues on the ground some of our commuters have been injured. We’re trying to arrange busses so that we can transport our commuters to work,” Metrorail spokesperson Tony Games said.
Metrorail says trains that were suppose to run on the affected lanes will remain stationery until the alternative lanes have been declared safe for trains to use. Train services between Johannesburg and Pretoria have been suspended.
