Three people were killed and two others injured after militants attacked a passenger bus in Kenya’s costal region on Thursday.

The bus belonging to Mombasa Raha company was travelling from the port city of Mombasa to Lamu when it came under heavy gunfire at Nyongoro area.

The injured passengers were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

No group had claimed the attack by the time of publication, but local media suspect al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab to be behind it.

Al-Shabaab has in the past staged many attacks in Kenya that have caused many deaths and massive destruction of property.

The attack comes four weeks after another attack on a passenger bus in northeast Kenya left ten people dead. That attack was claimed by al-Shabaab.

Security authorities say a team has since been deployed to comb the area as they pursue the attackers.
