The number of Migrant bodies discovered in a lorry in Austria reaches 70
Officials in Austria now say the number of the bodies of migrants that were found abandoned in a lorry on the border of Hungary is 70 and not 50 as it was initially reported.
Officials had estimated the number of the bodies that were found outside Vienna to be between 20 and 50.
The truck in which the bodies were found had Hungarian and Vienna resgistration however it was owned by Romanian national.
The decomposing bodies were discovered by police after being sent to investigate the dumped lorry on the A4 motorway heading towards Vienna.
The local police chief said it appeared those in the vehicle had been dead for one and a half to two days.
Janos Lazar, chief of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office, said that the plates had been issued in the city of Kecskemet, about 85 km from Budapest, to an unnamed Romanian national.
Lazar added Hungarian police were working with their Austrian counterparts to discover how this horrific incident could occur and to apprehend those responsible.
The victims were migrants trying to travel to Western Europe through Hungary or along another route that involved Hungarian participants.
“This exceptional occurrence demonstrates how the immigration situation has deteriorated in recent weeks,” Lazar said.
