The Nelson Mandela International Quilt
A San Francisco-based artist hopes to provoke a discussion about what Nelson Mandela means to young people, across continents. William Rhodes is creating a Nelson Mandela International Quilt, composed of squares designed by school children in the U.S. and South Africa. He’s started the project at a summer school in a marginalized San Francisco neighbourhood, home to a majority of African-American families. Later the students’ quilt patches will be taken to South Africa and sewn together with those made by local children.
