Telecoms companies in Nigeria are hoping to address concerns over revenue loss from international calls.
They want to hit a revenue target of 20 trillion Naira by blocking subscribers from accessing Skype and other Over-the-Top services.
Subscribers may also be prevented from performing certain functions like voice and video calls on WhatsApp and Facebook.
Telecoms companies say that issues with services such as Skype are that calls can be placed to recipients on traditional telephone networks. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free-of-charge, while calls to landlines, though reasonably priced, are charged via a debit-based user account system.
The increasing rise in players who provide voice and SMS, or apps such as WhatsApp, Skype, Facebook, BlackBerry Messenger and Viber, is eating into the voice revenue of Nigeria’s telecommunications companies.
