Tanzanian universities roll out Chinese language courses
A recent introduction of Chinese language degrees in Tanzania has taken the country by storm. Students and businessmen are now exploring the benefits and challenges of the move in the East African nation, which is the first sub-Saharan African country looking to use an African language, Swahili, as the medium of instruction throughout schooling years.
The ties between China and Tanzania are growing, and that calls for ways to break down the language barrier between the two.
The East African country, which is predominantly Swahili speaking, is now stepping up the efforts to ensure even better ties with China. The country’s higher education sector has now introduced undergraduate courses for the Chinese language in universities.
The roll out is not only among the country’s universities, local entrepreneurs are also interested in learning the new language, especially with increased business activity between China and Tanzania.
With over 50 years of diplomatic ties this adoption of the Chinese language into the curriculum at university level will go a long way in improving and strengthening relations between the two.
