Tanzania to launch national physical fitness campaign

Tanzanian Vice-President Samia Suluhu Hassan will next week launch a national physical fitness campaign aimed at curbing non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes, cancer and heart diseases, a senior government official said Sunday.
Inspired by the theme; ‘Afya Yako Mtaji Wako’ , loosely translated to ‘Your Health is your Wealth’, the Vice President will team up with officials from the Health ministry, dressed up in sportswear at the event to0 encourage the country’s citizens to cultivate the habit of regular exercise for their own health, The Citizen reports
Health experts say that Lack of physical exercises, tobacco smoking, harmful use of alcohol and unhealthy diets are among the risk factors for the rise of the NCDs in Tanzania.
According to the World Health Organization, the prevalence of NCDs has been on the rise worldwide for the past two decades, killing 38 million people globally each year, according to World Health Organization.
Heri Tungaraza, an oncologist at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), said currently there was substantial evidence that tied physical exercise to lower risk for colon, breast and prostate cancer.
