The government of Tanzania has set aside 681 million Tanzanian shillings (about 292,800 U.S. dollars) for the renovation of livestock markets across the country in a move aimed at boosting output, an official said on Sunday.

Felix Nandonde, the director of production and marketing department in the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, announced the renovation of the livestock markets when he inspected a livestock market in Tabora region.

He said the renovation of the livestock markets was aimed at improving output and improving the collection of government revenue from the markets.

Nandonde said the renovation will focus on construction of wells along with feeding and drinking stations in the markets.

“The renovation will also entail improving the handling of animals in the markets as well as the provision of food, water, shelters and veterinary care,” he said.

According to the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries statistics, Tanzania has about 33 million cattle, 21 million goats and 5.6 million sheep.
