Tanzania Mafia Island offers much to divers and lovers of marine life

Read 2 minutes

It may sound like a haven for organised crime – but in reality, it offers one of the most spectacular landscapes in the region.

The name ‘Mafia’ is said to have been coined by Sultan of Zanzibar- Seyyid Said- from the Swahili words, ‘Mahali Pa Afya’, meaning a healthy dwelling place.

You just need a little nerve to enjoy it.

It certainly looks good from the air – around 30 minute’s flight from Dar Es Salaam –

To an island dotted with coconut trees and mangroves.

But this is not what we’re here for.

Just a little way off Mafia Island, and little way down, this is what awaits you…

More than 400 different types of fish… And coral gardens spread out before you.

For these two divers, every visit means a new discovery.

Malaika and Buibwa only took up diving late last year. They are pioneers in these waters.

‘I always saw men dive, never any women. I was already attracted to diving, but that gave me the extra push, to be among the first female mafia divers’ Said Biubwa Ahmed- Diver

‘There a very few women dive masters generally. It’s a unique career. It’s different from land, when I dive I feel like am in paradise there. It’s beautiful’ Said Malaika- Diver

But I have to see for myself. That means a crash course in diving – a few basic but critical lessons -And the most important is, never hold your breath.

‘Well now that I have some basic skills, it’s time to go to the deep sea, let’s see if am a natural’

It’s a quick boat ride out, a chance to check my gear and get my nerves under control

And then…magic time

Down the anchor line…gradually getting deeper

That turtle makes it look easy…but it’s not.

The deeper you go the more the pressure builds.

My ears hurt and water is filling my mask.

Thumbs up means I’ve had enough.

‘It’s pretty difficult, it’s not for everyone, but I promise you, these two ladies, were meant for this’

A different world to the one on the surface – And a whole new world of opportunity for Malaika and Buibwa
