Tanzania is Africa’s biggest gainer in the latest FIFA world ranking, having moved up 22 places to stand at position 135 globally.

The improvement is attributed to the East African nation’s recent wins over Burundi and Botswana.

Egypt remains the top side in the continent, ranking at position 19 in the overall standings, followed by Senegal at position 30 and Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions Cameroon at position 33.

Other notable gainers from the continent include Madagascar (moved up 17 places – ranked 120th), Mauritania (moved up 16 places – ranked 90th), Kenya (moved up 10 places – ranked 78th) and Swaziland (moved up 10 places – ranked 88th).

Africa’s biggest losers in these latest rankings include Liberia (deteriorated 39 places – ranked 141st), São Tomé and Príncipe (deteriorated 27 places – ranked 178th), Rwanda (deteriorated 24 places – ranked 117), the Central African Republic (deteriorated 22 places – ranked 130th) and Ethiopia (deteriorated 20 places – ranked 124th).

In the overall rankings, Brazil took top spot for the first time in seven years, dislodging fellow South Americans Argentina.

The Argentines now rank second ahead of Germany.

Finishing the top ten are Chile (4th), Colombia (5th), France (6th), Belgium (7th), Portugal (8th), Switzerland (9th), Spain (10th).

The next FIFA World Ranking will be released on 4 May 2017.
