Tanzania’s energy regulator has raised the maximum retail prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene, citing higher international energy prices and a weaker local currency.
The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) raised the price of petrol by 3.72 percent, diesel by 1.11 percent and kerosene by 2.61 percent in its latest monthly price caps.
The new fuel prices, which take effect immediately, will last for a month.
Fuel prices are one of the biggest drivers of inflation in Tanzania after the cost of food.
“The increases in local prices have been caused by increases in world oil market prices and depreciation of the Tanzanian shilling against the United States dollar, the currency used in the procurement of petroleum products,” EWURA said in a statement.
The regulator raised the price of petrol in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam by 74 Tanzanian shillings to 2,063 Tanzanian shillings ($0.9214) per litre and that of diesel by 21 shillings to 1,908 shillings per litre.
Kerosene prices increased 47 shillings to 1,858 shillings per litre.
