The Tanzanian government in collaboration with aid agencies has dispatched medical workers, food, shelter materials and other basic necessities to the northwest region where a devastating 5.7 magnitude earthquake killed at least 16 people, injured 250 others and destroyed lots of property.
The quake struck the Kagera region on the shores of Lake Victoria on Saturday.
Salum Kijuu, Kagera Regional Commissioner said 840 homes had been destroyed and another 2,000 damaged, leaving thousands of families homeless. A smaller aftershock hit the region on Monday.
“We are trying our very best to offer necessary humanitarian support to the victims such as medical care, food and temporary shelter,” Reuters reports Kijuu to say.
Neighbouring Kenya donated necessities to the Tanzanian authorities to help the victims of the quake.
