Tanzania chooses Turkish, Portuguese firms to build multi-billion-dollar rail link
Tanzania has chosen Turkish and Portuguese construction companies to build a railway line that will connect the East African country with its landlocked neighbors.
The track is expected to cost more than 1.1 billion dollars. Yapi Merkezi and Mota-Engil will build 400 kilometres of railway line between Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Tanzania last month to strengthen ties between the two nations. Tanzania is also planning a 2,200-kilometre project known as the Central Railway Line. Once completed, it will run from Dar es Salaam to Kigali.
It will also link the Mwanza port in Tanzania to Lake Victoria. That project is estimated to cost around 7.5 billion dollars.
