Tanzania has appointed a local tactician to take over from Dutchman Mart Noorj, who was fired last week, after a string of poor performances.

The Tanzania Football Federation has appointed Charles Boniface Mkwasa, a coach with local Tanzanian side Yanga Football club, as an interim head coach of Tanzania’s national football team, the Taifa stars, for a period of three months.

The federation also appointed Zanzibar coach Hemed Morocco as Mkwasa’s assistant.

The new coach’s immediate assignment will be against Uganda in the Africa nations championships in less than a fortnight and Nigeria in the Africa cup of nations qualifiers in September.

TFF President Jamal Malinzi says Mkwasa has been given three months to coach the Stars who are engaged in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.

He said TFF has already written to the government recommending Mkwasa to be paid the same amount of salary that Nooij was receiving, plus other benefits such as a house and car.

Malinzi said the federation recognises Mkwasa as a Yanga employee and he will continue working with his club, despite being appointed national team coach.
