Talks to end DR Congo’s political crisis postponed

Read < 1 minute

Talks to end the Democratic Republic of Congo’s political crisis were again suspended on Saturday.

That followed 48 hours of negotiations over President Joseph Kabila’s refusal to quit power. His second and final term ended on December 20th. That sparked violent protests that have left at least 40 people dead, according to the United Nations. Kabila obtained a controversial court ruling in May that stated he could remain in power until a successor was chosen. It’s still not clear when fresh elections will be held.

The negotiations, mediated by the Catholic Church, are now expected to resume after a Christmas break with hopes of a deal by December 30th.
