Talks on how to conduct a fresh election in Kenya collapse

Read < 1 minute

Talks between Kenya’s electoral commission, ruling party and the opposition on how to conduct the fresh presidential elections have collapsed, officials say.

According to Senator James Orengo, Opposition candidate Raila Odinga’s representative, the talks failed because the ruling party party has introduced changes in the electoral law and is using its majority in parliament to remove a requirement that results be transmitted electronically, a measure introduced to curb electoral fraud following the 2007 flawed poll.

The east African country’s Supreme Court nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta’s August re-election citing irregularities and illegalities in the vote counting forcing commission charged with conducting elections to set a new date to rerun the presidential elections, October 26.

Odinga has said he will not participate in the fresh poll without major reforms of the electoral commission. Kenyatta has said he does not want changes.
