Talk Africa: The DRC’s change of guard

It marked a new chapter for The Democratic Republic of Congo as new President Felix Tshisekedi took the oath of office at the presidential palace in Kinshasa on the 24th of February. The inauguration ceremony saw an end to former president Joseph Kabila’s 18-year term.
Cheers and jubilation rocked the DRC’s capital that Thursday afternoon as supporters of the incoming president celebrated their victory, which followed a long awaited and grueling electoral process. Elections were initially slated for December 2016, but had since been postponed severally.

But with the country still reeling from contested outcomes of the elections, what can be expected of President Tshisekedi’s first term? And what more does the future hold for the DRC, in the aftermath of its historic change of guard?
