Read < 1 minute

Tanzania has begun implementing a nation-wide ban on the use of plastic bags.

The ban comes into force this week, with the Plastic Carrier Bags Regulation act of 2019 prohibiting the production, importation, sale and use of all single-use plastic bags.

The move now follows similar steps made by Rwanda and neighbouring Kenya, in an attempt to tackle the plastic pollution menace.Under Tanzania’s new measures, anyone in possession of plastic bags can be slapped with hefty fines, with those caught manufacturing plastic bags also facing jail time.
