A power-sharing deal has been signed in Khartoum and Sudan has put the political crisis behind it— at least for now.
The pact has put together an 11-member sovereign council in which the military and civilians will jointly steer the country during a 3-year transition period.
Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan will head the transitional council, while Abdalla Hamdok, a former UN economist, has been appointed Prime Minister.
Celebrations broke out across the North African country as news of the deal filtered through and heads of state and other dignitaries gathered in Khartoum to witness the swearing-in of the new leaders.
But with a sanctions-hit economy and months of political uncertainty, will Sudan’s transitional agreement finally pave the road to lasting peace?
