Sudan has declared its support for the proposal by regional body IGAD to send more troops into South Sudan to act as a protection force to prevent military acts in the country.

According to a press release by Sudan’s foreign ministry Tuesday, Sudan reiterated readiness to continue its efforts with the countries of the Inter-Governmental Authority for Development in Africa (IGAD) to achieve peace in South Sudan.

“Realization of peace in South Sudan is associated with peace in Sudan,” Abdul-Ghani Al-Naeem, Sudan’s foreign ministry under-secretary, was quoted in the press release as saying.

There are fears that South Sudan could slide back into full war following the latest stand-off between President Salva Kiir and former first vice president Riek Machar.

Forces loyal to the two leaders clashed in Juba in July, prompting Machar to flee the capital with his troops.

President Kiir subsequently sacked him from his vice president post, replacing him with Taban Deng-Gai.

Machar is currently in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum.
