Sudan opposition leader Yasir Arman arrived in Juba, South Sudan on Monday after he was released together with two other rebel leaders by the military junta
Arman, a high-ranking member of the rebel group, Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, was arrested in his home in Khartoum on June 5 and was detained for five days.
He had just recently returned to Sudan after spending several years in exile.
The Sudanese government convicted and sentenced Arman to death in absentia in 2011 for his involvement in an uprising in the Blue Nile State.
The government today also freed SPLM secretary, Ismail Jalab, and its spokesperson, Mubarak Ardo. The two were arrested after they had met Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed last week.
Ahmed was in Khartoum trying to broker a deal between members of Sudan’s transitional military council and protesters who are demanding the military hand over control of the government to civilians.
It’s believed the Ethiopian Prime Minister negotiated Jalab and Ardo’s release today.
