Sudan, Ethiopia & Egypt to express their final stance on construction of dam
Negotiations between Cairo, Addis Ababa and Khartoum have entered a decisive stage in which the parties must express their final stance concerning the controversy and disagreement caused by Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam.
The dam threatens Egypt’s annual share of the Nile waters. The three countries had agreed on the importance of holding the meeting comprising their irrigation and foreign ministers ahead of the tripartite meeting of irrigation ministers.
Ministers from the three countries failed to reach an agreement on the Ethiopian project at a meeting earlier this month.
It’s been more than three years since Ethiopia started construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile, the main tributary of the River Nile, some 800 kilometres from the capital, Addis Ababa.
The dam is set to have a capacity to produce 6,000 megawatts of electricity and become the biggest hydro-electric power station in Africa.
