Street protest calls against austerity measures in Sudan largely ignored

Read < 1 minute

Civil disobedience organizers have failed to rally significant support in Sudan.

Instead of taking to the streets to express their concerns against austerity measures, many Sudanese chose to stay at home. The civil disobedience campaign was organized by some anti-government groups through social media. The trigger for these protests came last month, when the Sudanese government imposed a fresh round of austerity measures.

The rise in petrol and diesel prices led to an increase in the cost of many basic goods, including electricity and medicines.
