Stakeholders & players optimistic of football growth in Gambia

Read < 1 minute

For more than two decades, the political climate in Gambia has hampered the development of football, the country’s top sport.

But the complete changeover of power in this tiny West African state has given new hope to many young Gambian football players and fans. In the streets of the capital Banjul, young people have rediscovered the pleasure of playing football.  Competitions and training sessions are now organised everywhere after years of disruptions under the former regime. Gambian soccer players and stakeholders have welcomed the political changeover, buts still expect more from the new government, such as developing and promoting a healthy football community in Gambia, as well as stabilizing and improving the financial and administrative football infrastructure in the country.

In 2014, The Gambia was suspended for two years from all continental football after using five overage players in U20 squad.
