Stadium stampede in Antananarivo kills one
At least one person died in a stampede at the entrance of a stadium in Madagascar’s capital, Antananarivo, which also left 37 injured.
The chaotic scene occurred before the country’s 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Senegal.
“There was a stampede in front of the stadium (…) for now we have a report of one dead and 37 injured,” the director of Hrja hospital, Oliva Alain Rakoto, said.
Witnesses report that thousands of fans had turned up for the match, and had been kept waiting outside the stadium since morning. The game was due to kick off at 11:30GMT.
The game ended 2-2, boosting Madagascar’s chances of qualifying for next year’s continental showpiece in Cameroon.
Madagascar are now placed second in Group A, same on points with their visitors Senegal, who have a better goal difference.
