Humanitarian agencies are scaling up their efforts in response to a crippling water shortage in South Sudan. Many South Sudanese fleeing violence in the Upper Nile state are without access to clean water.
The recent deployment of additional UN peacekeepers has enabled humanitarian workers to resume their aid efforts. However, with the onset of the rainy season, the threat of outbreaks of diarrhoea and cholera is increasing.
“This needless conflict is creating untold human suffering and all that we are doing as humanitarians and even as UNMISS is dealing with the consequences of a problem. The fundamental problem is conflict. We need to fix the politics and we need to stop this needless fighting. The guns have to stay silent to give the South Sudanese the opportunity to live in peace and prosperity and also to live a life of dignity,” said Eugene Owusu, UN Humanitarian Coordinator, South Sudan.
