South Sudan has no other option but to return to peace – VP Taban Deng

South Sudanese first vice president Taban Deng Gai says there is no other option for the worlds youngest nation but to return to peace.

Deng is in South Africa where he has met the South African vice president Cyril Ramaphosa.

“We have to settle so that people develop, so that people can have health services, people have roads and people are food secure,” Deng said.

Deng said his government is very keen on implementing peace, and there is no going back to any crisis or war.

He arrived in South Africa on Tuesday for talks with Ramaphosa on the peace process in South Sudan.

Ramaphosa said he was happy with the progress made in South Sudan, and that he was confident the government of the world’s youngest nation will stabilize country.

“We can say now that the guns have gone silent and they are working together in cooperation with President Salva Kiir. The government has become stable, the parliament has opened and we were very pleased and heartened to hear all these developments,” said Ramaphosa.

The South African vice president was appointed by President Jacob Zuma as peace envoy to South Sudan.
