South Sudan government is accusing the opposition of derailing the peace process

South Sudan President

These accusations have happened before. Both sides in the South Sudan conflict are known for blaming each other. This time, government accuses the opposition for failing to meet the deadline to create a unity government.

“Before presentation of the list of our nominees on the 14th as was agreed, the IO came out and said they were not ready for establishment of transitional government of national unity without the constitution that was a set back.” Michael Makuei, Minister of Information, South Sudan

Opposition leader and former Vice President Riek Machar is adamant. If the two sides don’t agree on the outstanding issues the matter will once again go before the United Nations and African Union. And the main point of disagreement is the number of provinces.

This latest failure to form a unity government is yet another blow for the people of South Sudan. They’ve waited for more than two years for stability to return to the country. Now it seems that wait is still not over. The main concern for ordinary South Sudanese is that war once again breaks out. With thousands killed in the previous conflict and well over a million people displaced – South Sudan can still afford another war.
