The United Nations (UN) is warning that hunger in South Sudan has reached “unprecedented” levels, with nearly 5 million people suffering from severe food insecurity.
The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization has warned that the situation in the world’s youngest nation could rapidly become catastrophic if the country fails to return to stability and allow agricultural production to continue.
The World Food Program has said that both South Sudan’s government and the opposition have held up food shipments in parts of the country which is trying to recover from the effects of the two-year civil war.
In July, about $30 million in supplies were looted from warehouses of the two UN agencies during clashes between government and rebel forces.
