South Sudan’s football governing body canceled the nation’s top football league due to disruptions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The decision was arrived at after an emergency meeting convened by the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) board of directors on Wednesday.
The SSFA had suspended all football activities in the country in March as a precautionary measure.
The SSFA decided against declaring a champion of the country’s top league and canceled all local leagues countrywide with no relegation or promotion of teams from different levels of the leagues.
According to the SSFA spokesperson Alul Daniel, South Sudan will not have a participant in the CAF Champions League while Alrabita Juba, who won the South Sudan Cup, will represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup.
“The revocation of the season will remain until further notice and further orders from the government concerning the COVID-19 menace,” a statement from the SSFA said.
South Sudan joins Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo-Brazzaville, DR Congo, Kenya, Mauritius, Niger and Uganda in ending their domestic football seasons early due to COVID-19. Kenya’s decision to cancel its season is to be reviewed by a dispute tribunal due to a disagreement between its football federation and league administrator.
