South Korea halts Germany’s title defense
FIFA World Cup defending champion Germany has crashed out of the 2018 tournament after losing 2-0 to South Korea.
The loss means the Germans finish last in their group, from which Sweden and Mexico have progressed.
The battle in Group F went to the last day of games, as three of the four teams had a chance to progress into the Round of 16.
The Germans, having lost their opening game to Mexico, beat Sweden 2-1 in their second game to boost their chances of progression. They however needed a win against South Korea in order to get the job done, and they failed to do so.
The South Koreans were at risk of leaving Russia without a single point, but waited for the big stage to grab their victory.
The South Korean goals came through Young-Gwon Kim and Heung-Min Son, with the latter tapping into an empty net after Germany’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had gone forward in search of an equalizer for his side.
In the other game, Sweden beat Mexico 3-0 to grab first spot by goal difference as they stood equal on points with Mexico.
