South Africa’s football season to start in October
South Africa’s domestic football season for 2020/2021 will begin next month, PSL Chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza announced on Wednesday.
The season will kick off with the MTN8 competition on October 17, while, the 2020/2021 South African Premier Division, currently known as the DStv Premiership for sponsorship reasons, will kick off on October 24.
“The executive committee, yesterday, decided that the league will be starting on October 17 with the MTN8,” Khoza said.
“The DStv Premiership will be starting on the 24th of October. I think it was important to make that announcement.”
The fixtures for the upcoming competitions will be released later. Khoza also confirmed that the PSL and DStv have a five-year partnership with the prize money for the DStv Premiership being 15 million Rand.
However, the Telkom Knockout tournament will not be staged this season due to the withdrawal of sponsors. The Nedbank Cup will also take place.
SuperSport United won the MTN8 competition while Mamelodi Sundowns won a domestic treble of the Premiership, Telkom Knockout and Nedbank Cup last season.
The PSL also announced that the PSL Awards will be held before the start of the season with the date being confirmed in due course.
South African clubs have been busy during the off-season with a number of transfers of players taking place in addition to personnel changes at the helm of the clubs.
The previous season had been affected by the coronavirus pandemic which saw the season suspended in March and conclude on September 12 after resumption in August.
