South Africa’s Darryn Binder won the Catalan Grand Prix on Sunday finishing ahead of Italians Tony Arbolino and Dennis Foggia.
Having been in contention for much of the race, Binder managed to go past Foggia early in the final lap and held on for the remainder of the race to take the win by 0.103 seconds. Binder is the seventh winner in nine races.
The win by Binder, who races for CIP Green Power, saw him secure his first ever Moto3 victory in what was his 94th attempt.
As a result, the 22-year-old climbs up to 10th in the Championship standings on 62 points.
“It is an extraordinary feeling. I have waited a long time but today I did everything I could,” he said.
Japan’s Ai Ogura leads the standings with 122 points ahead of Albert Arenas of Spain and John McPhee of Great Britain who have 119 points and 98 points respectively.
Darryn’s older brother, Brad, previously competed in the category and won the overall title in 2016 making him just the third motorcycle grand prix world champion from South Africa. He then went on to compete in Moto2 and is currently in MotoGP.
In August, Brad also scored his first victory of his MotoGP premier class career winning the race for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing at the Automotodrom Brno in Czech Republic.
