Teachers who are making a difference around the world, are being recognised with a million-dollar prize.
Fifty of them have been shortlisted for the Global Teacher of the Year Award.
They include two South Africans, Dr Colleen Henning, a science teacher at St John’s College, and Warren Sparrow, from Rondebosch Boys’ Preparatory School in Cape Town.
Two teachers are among the final 50 nominees for Global teacher Prize – a million-dollar award that organisers hope will become known as the ‘Nobel Prize’ for teaching.
Henning says teaching was not her initial career choice, but tutoring physics during her PhD changed that.
Henning believes science is so real, that you can only learn it by doing it.
If she wins the big prize in March, Henning would like to contribute to a bursary scheme for economically disadvantaged students, and start a science teachers’ association.
