South African musician Sho Madjozi signed by American label Epic Records
South African musician Sho Madjozi keeps going on from strength to strength after she was signed by international record label Epic Records.
Sony Music Entertainment Africa made the announcement on Tuesday in a Facebook post saying Madjozi, popular for the viral tune “John Cena”, has “all the makings of an international force”.
Epic Records Chairman and CEO Sylvia Rhone said that African artists were currently enjoying an unprecedented level of visibility in music and Madjozi was doing an amazing job in representing South Africa.
“She’s bold, brilliant and remarkably talented and her music embodies all that is special about her homeland. We’re honored to have her as the newest member of the Epic family,” Rhone said.
The post added that Sony Music Entertainment Africa will support its sister label by working with Madjozi, who will drop her debut single for Epic Records.
“We’re working at a special company at a special time and we couldn’t be prouder than we are of our local star Sho and our big sister Sylvia for partnering to make this happen,” Sean Watson, Managing Director of Sony Music Entertainment Africa, said.
Madjozi also took to social media to confirm to her followers the record deal which makes her the first South African act signed by the label.
“You’re looking at the newest signee at Epic Records US!! Iyah,” she wrote on Twitter.

In November last year, WWE wrestler John Cena surprised Madjozi while she was performing on an episode of ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’; the first time that she had met Cena in person.
In addition to her catchy tunes, which also includes “Huku”, Madjozi has also picked up a string of awards such as “Best New International Artist” at the BET Awards, “Entertainer of the Year” from Forbes and “Favourite African Star” at the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards.
Epic Records, founded in 1953, is owned by Sony Music Entertainment. It has signed popular acts such as Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Outkast and Sade.
One of the label’s current acts is Jidenna, a Nigerian-American rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer, famous for hits such as “Classic Man” and “Yoga”.
