South African comedian Trevor Noah has been crowned “Best Host” at the MTV Movie and TV Awards.

The award ceremony took place in Los Angeles, U.S. last night.

Currently, the comedian’s name is trending across South Africa as people celebrate his achievement.

Upon receiving the award, Noah, who is currently host of the The Daily Show on Comedy Central, dedicated his victory to his mother, Patricia Nombuyiselo:

“There is one person I aspire to be every single day, and that is my mom: a powerful, strong black woman who never listened when people told her she couldn’t be more,” said Noah. He also thanked U.S. President Donald Trump “for the comedy”.

Noah was raised by his mother during apartheid in South Africa, where he grew up half-white and half-black in a troubled time where interracial relationships were illegal.

According to an interview with All Things Comedy, Noah’s mother was jailed and fined by the South African white minority government for the illegal relationship, and his father moved back to Switzerland.

Noah took over The Daily Show from longtime host Jon Stewart in 2015, and with big shoes to fill, it appears this award shows that the presenter is well on his way to filling them.
