South African animator hopes to follow in Disney’s footsteps
Walt Disney is famous around the world over for its animated films, and children aren’t the only ones who believe in its magic.
A young South African entrepreneur wants to create his own Walt Disney, and is relying on his creative toys – made of recycled materials – to do the trick.
Goodwill Mokoka, visual artist and founder of Taki Originals, believes he can succeed and build his own brand in the country.
“The one thing that I know about Lego and Walt Disney at some point they were na?ve as I am. So if they could make it why not. As Steve Jobs said the ones who change the world are the ones who believe they can,” he said.
Mokoka’s two-year-old company Taki Originals is already known for crazy-coloured toys, made from recycled materials.
He also runs an animation studio and wants to create authentic stories about Africa.
Using his trade, Moloka hopes to tell of African stories to the world.
“I want to be writing stories of black kids in Africa. The story of Africa is hardships. But we are more than that. We have ambition, and I think Africa is the hardest working continent,” he said.
He has high hopes that one day, his brand will compete on the international stage.
