South Africa is the new champion of African netball.

The Proteas were crowned champions on Tuesday after defeating Zambia 72-53 in the final of the 2019 Africa Netball Cup, played at the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town.

The South Africans came to the final game high on morale after winning their previous five games.

Zambia looked to halt this streak, but the South Africans proved too strong for their opponents, and with the advantage of home support, they had their eyes on the trophy.

The Zambian started brightly, going ahead early on, but the hosts neutralized the threat and took charge of the first quarter.

South Africa maintained their focus and were happy to be ahead 31-25 at half-time break.

In the second half, the hosts continued their good run, extending their lead to 53-37 at the end of the third quarter.

The 72-53 final scoreline was testament of the strength of the Proteas.

The 2019 African Netball Championships was held in Cape Town from 18 October.
