South Africa to explain to the ICC why it failed to arrest Sudan’s Bashir

Read < 1 minute

South African attorneys are at The Hague to make their case that the country is in compliance with the International Criminal Court.

South Africa has to explain why it failed to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in 2015. Bashir is wanted by the ICC for genocide and war crimes.

Our Europe correspondent Kevin Ozebek is tracking the story from Brussels.

Omar al-Bashir is accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes.

South Africa was recently compelled by the North Gauteng High Court to withdraw its notice to the United Nations that it wishes to pull out from the ICC because it failed to go through parliament meaning the country is still remains a member state and must comply with the rules of the ICC.

The government expected Al-Bashir at the African Union Summit and so it wrote to the ICC arguing it cannot arrest a sitting president.
