South Africa’s deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa has said his country will continue working with South Sudan’s leaders to ensure lasting peace in the country.

Ramaphosa said he had been in contact with both President Salva Kiir and vice president Riek Machar following the renewed violence in the world’s youngest nation.

Forces loyal to Kiir and those loyal to Machar engaged in a five-day gun battle since last week, before the two leaders declared a ceasefire on Monday.

Close to 300 people including tens of civilians were killed in the violence.

Meanwhile, at least 42,000 people have been displaced by the fighting in and around the capital Juba.

Riek Machar is reported to have left the capital with his troops to the outskirts, but says he is not planning for war.
