South Africa mourns the passing of Legendary Jazz maestro, Ray Phiri
South African jazz, fusion and mbaqanga legendary musician Ray Phiri, passed on after losing battle to lung cancer, reports local media.
The 70 year old, one of music greats, had a crowd funding initiative to assist in his meeting his medical expenses after a two-month battle with lung cancer.
Ray Phiri is a founding member of the Cannibals in the 1970s. Later, the Cannibals would grow in size and rename themselves, becoming the hugely influential Afro-fusion band Stimela.
“Music is spiritual. It provides healing and reflection, and it should add value. Emotion should shine through, and a healthy respect for the audience is required,” Phiri told City Press in a recent interview.
