South Africa and Kenya were drawn in the same pool for the fifth leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Los Angeles, United States, from February 29 to March 1.
South Africa and Kenya are in Pool B alongside Series newcomers Ireland and Canada.
The Blitzboks recently finished second at the Sydney Sevens after narrowly losing 12-10 to Fiji in the final at the Bankwest Stadium on Sunday. That improved performance came on the back of a disappointing 10th place finish in Hamilton.
The Blitzboks are second in the HSBC standings on 67 points, nine behind log leaders New Zealand and 11 ahead of France in third place.
Meanwhile, Kenya endured a horrific showing after Shujaa finished in last place (16th) after losing 19-12 to Samoa in the 15th place playoff. Kenya also lost all its pool matches to Fiji, Wales and New Zealand.
Shujaa, who are currently 11th in the HSBC standings, collected only one point at the Sydney 7s giving them a total of 26 points from four rounds.
Kenya 7s coach Paul Feeney has since said that there needs to be a change in the team’s training regime in order to post better results.
Kenya won its first match against South Africa in the last 15 attempts following a 14-36 victory in the Hamilton Sevens.
The USA Eagles Sevens will be aiming to win a third consecutive title on home soil.
The Dignity Health Sports Park in California is the same venue scheduled to host rugby sevens in the 2028 Olympic Games.
