Somalia’s breakaway northern territory of Somaliland has requested the United States to be exempted from President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations from entering the US.
According to the report by News 24, Somaliland has distanced itself from Somalia which appears on the list, since it considers itself an independent state after breaking away in 1991.
Somaliland wrote a letter on Monday to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly requesting the exemption to the travel restriction according to Somaliland’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Saad Ali Shire
Somaliland argued in the statement that it has not experienced the emergence of terrorist organizations as compared to Somalia, where homegrown extremist group al-Shabaab continues to carry out deadly attacks.
