Somalia celebrates day of sports for development & peace

Read < 1 minute

Somalia recently celebrated the International Day of Sports for Development and Peace.

The new minister for Youth and Sports Khadija Mohamed Dirie graced the event, held at the Benadir Stadium in Mogadishu.  This commemoration was intended to show how Somali sports can be a driver of positive change, and how it is specifically helping to nurture peace and development in the country.  Although there is some visible stability in much of the Somalia, attacks by the militant group Al-Shabaab are still common.

The United Nations General Assembly named the 6th April as the International Day of Sports for Development and Peace back in August 2013.  The day has been celebrated each year since then.
