According to the police, the teenage girl was sexually abused by a gang on Friday and then thrown from a six-storey building in the capital, Mogadishu.

The incident sparked outrage with hundreds of women taking to the streets of Mogadishu on Sunday to protest and demand justice.

Incidents of kidnap, rape, torture and murder of women and girls have been increasingly reported across Somalia in recent years.

A few days ago, a 16-year old girl was kidnapped, raped and tortured for several hours before she was found tied up in Garowe, the capital of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland.

The cases have put the federal parliament in the spotlight for refusing to pass the Sexual Offences Bill, which was aimed at protecting women and girls from gender-based violence.
