Ethiopian authorities have shut social media down to enable students take their university entrance exams without distractions.

The government said the ban was meant to prevent the students from being distracted from studying during the exam period and to prevent the circulation of false rumours.

Blocked sites include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Viber.

The shutdown is expected to remain in place until Wednesday.

University entrance exams were cancelled in May after pictures of the test were found circulating on social media.
