Small scale farmers in Africa face daunting obstacles to grow in size

Agriculture is either the biggest employer, or the biggest contributor to GDP, or both.

Despite this, intra-African trade is barely above 10% of the continent’s total trade. Worse still, trade deals like the African growth and opportunity act can stop African states from moving up the value chain into producing and selling processed agricultural commodities.
